nice to meet you.
I’m an editor at large—that is, looking for contract, part-time, or full-time work. Writing and editing are two of my favorite ways to wrinkle my brain.
But I’m not about only words. I like developing new ways of communicating with images and design.
brain-wrinkling.
My formal brain-wrinkling happened at some wonderful places: B.A. (philosophy, minor in education) and M.A.Ed. (museum education) at the College of William and Mary, which still feels like home to me; J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law; and a certificate in infographics and data visualization from the Parsons School of Design at the New School. I’ve also taken a smattering of classes in various subjects at the Community College of Allegheny County, the University of Pittsburgh, the Art Institute (Pittsburgh and online), and the American University.

“Top shelf work ethic and results; always know someone has my back when Mitch [Lisa] is assigned to our work product. Upholds RAND standards very well.”—author
“my impressions of her are difficult to place in enough superlatives. It’s truly a privilege to work with her, and I am delighted I get to work with her on HSOAC [Homeland Security Operational Analysis Center] reports as often as I do.”—author
“I was very happy when Lisa was assigned as our editor. She has a reputation as one of RAND’s toughest editors, and she lived up to it!”—author
“We had a great time going back and forth on Teams while performing the job of detectives to find and fix some of the citations and author references. The whole experience was truly a pleasure (which is a very weird thing for me to say about editing anything).”—author
“her caliber of work is consistently high, and she is consistently reliable at meeting often-unrealistic deadlines.”—author
“I appreciate her patience and thoughtfulness with everyone. . . . She is kind, fair, and equally helpful to all. This is regardless of how she is treated, and I think that speaks volumes.”—author
“an external client . . . told us [my manager] she was ‘awesome!’”—managing editor
“‘outstanding,’ ‘fabulous,’ ‘masterful,’ ‘superb,’ and ‘world-class.’”—managing editor, quoting authors
“Lisa’s ‘heroic,’ ‘around the clock’ availability and ‘unbelievable’ responsiveness.”—managing editor, quoting authors
“Lisa’s error rate was well below the team average and remains very, very impressive.”—managing editor
“Lisa is a pleasure to work with! She has a great sense of humor, [and] she was extremely effective leveraging email and chat to ensure that we stayed appropriately connected. I would gladly have her on any and all teams.”—author
“Another [author] described working with Lisa as ‘true privilege.’ And a program director described her as ‘relentlessly cheerful, collaborative, and willing to go way beyond what could be reasonably expected of her.’”—managing editor
“consistently reliable when it comes to meeting . . . unrealistic and crazy deadlines.”—author
“She exceeded my expectations in virtually every respect. The quality of her editing extended far beyond improving the grammar, fixing typos, adding references, resetting the tables, and other things I would expect of an editor. Her improvements were far more profound: correcting logic errors, finding mistakes in a highly technical document (such as checking our mathematical equations), finding substitute figures when permissions were not available, etc. Given that she only had 2 weeks to do this while no doubt balancing other demands, this was an astonishing amount of work.”—author
“Scores in the first quartile reflect the lowest error rates per MS page . . . . Lisa’s score fell in the first quartile [from the previous year], and her error rate was well below the mean. Compared with 2018, Lisa’s error rate decreased by a moderate margin—precisely the desired trend and all the more impressive in Lisa’s case, given the volume and pace of assignments. (‘[Lisa’s] quality of work is unbelievably accurate and amazing, particularly with all of the unrealistic deadlines,’ wrote one reviewer.)”—managing editor
“timely, courteous, and professional.”—author
“worked reliably and under the often very tight timelines we often have in HSOAC, and did so with affability, responsiveness, and openness to feedback.”—author
“stands her ground when it’s necessary to do so.”—author
“Mitch has been a pleasure to work with. She shows excellent editorial judgment and communicates the reasons for her judgments when asked. I have been able to learn from her over the past year. She is prompt in her communication, and careful in her review. Her work improved the clarity and reliability of the [report]. I would welcome the opportunity to work with her again.”—author
“Mitch finished her tasks on time, and the overall publications budget ended up well under the initial projected budget, which surprised me because she did such a thorough job of editing throughout the entire report. She did an excellent job explaining any changes that she made that were not obvious. As a researcher, this helps me because I not only understand why she was making changes but I understand how I can improve my writing in the future.”—author
“Working with Mitch [for several assets] has been very pleasant and professional, and her edits improved the clarity and accuracy of the [products]. . . . I was also very happy with the edits that Mitch introduced that made the writing clearer without losing the technical precision. For all of these, she was punctual and communicated next steps to us clearly. . . . It’s very clear to me that the process works well when Mitch is involved.”—author
“She provides a sort of fail safe for the sorts of subtle logical errors that regularly escape the attention of project team members and editors in a hurry during the pre-publication phase, but are still quite obvious to sponsors, the media, and important stakeholders long after the horse has left the barn. She is superb at catching inconsistencies, interpretation issues, wrong word choices, and other goofs, saving us all from embarrassments, post-pub document revisions, and the need to beg the money folks for forgiveness. I love how she’ll occasional[ly] go do a little research on the side and question whether what we’re saying is actually realistic or will make sense to the intended audience. The important thing here is that when Mitch does push back on something because it doesn’t look quite right based on what she’s learned and then I respond that in fact it’s OK as written for a particular reason, we’re done with that issue and we move on. . . . She’s also fast. Real fast. She responds well to questions, thinks creatively about options and presents them effectively for the final decision, and sticks to deadlines. Bottom line: There’s a reason why her services are so high in demand around here.”—author
“Mitch was a pleasure to work with. She showed an attention to detail as well as flexibility to respond to my requests for changes given the sponsor and context. This is evidence of prudence and good judgement. She was also very responsive via email, and her communications in the text were very clear. The report is better because of her careful input. The sponsor in particular wanted RAND editing and the ability to distribute the report widely, and Mitch was an important part of that process.”—author
[Her quality of work] “cannot be beat. Lisa has ruthless attention to detail; it’s incredible to see. As one example of her attention to detail, she often suggests making a change throughout, but first asks permission at first use, and if you give her thumbs up, she attacks the paper, ensuring that every single instance is perfected. . . . I have been impressed with her time and again, her attention to detail and professionalism never slip an inch regardless of how much she has on her plate. She is utterly reliable and a great team member!”—author
“Mitch moved mountains in order to get this completed for us in time for an on-time delivery to the sponsor.”—author
