Using phpIM

Using Your People List

To use your people list, perform these steps:

  1. In the PHPIM window, click Click here to open the floating people list.

    Your list of people appears. You may close this window at any time by clicking the red X button in the upper right corner.

Setting Your Status

To set your status for people to see, perform these steps:

  1. In the PHPIM window, click Click here set or unset away.

Setting a Password

To set a password for your user name, perform these steps:

  1. In the PHPIM window, click Click here set a password on this account.

    A window appears prompting you for the password.
  2. In the Password text box, type your password.
  3. In the Again text box, type the password again.
  4. Click Submit.
    A message confirms that you have set your password. You may close the message window by clicking the red X button in the upper right corner.
  5. In the PHPIM window, click Click here to return to the log-in screen.

    The PHPIM window appears.
  6. In the Username text box, type your user name.
  7. In the Password text box, type your password.
  8. Click Submit.
    The PHPIM window appears.

Setting the Refresh Rate

Note that at any time, you can click Static to prevent the window from refreshing until you specifically request a refresh.

To set the automatic refresh rate, perform these steps:

  1. In the PHPIM window, click Click here set the refresh rate.

    The refresh rate window appears.
  2. In the Refresh rate (in seconds) text box, type the number of seconds you want to wait between refreshes.
    The higher the number, the longer you will risk waiting for messages to appear, but the less often your web server will experience hits and the less often your web browser will flicker.
  3. Click Submit Query.
    The window confirms that your refresh rate is set. You may close the window by clicking the red X button at the top right corner.

Opening a Chat Room

To open a chat room, perform these steps:

  1. In the PHPIM window, click Click here to open a chat room.

    The PHPIM Chat window appears.
  2. In the Room text box, type a name for your room.
  3. Click Submit Query.
    The [room name] - PHPIM window appears.

Chatting in a Chat Room

To chat in a chat room, perform these steps:

  1. In the Message text box, type your message to the others in the chat room.
  2. Click Submit Query.
    The top pane of the window shows who else is in the room and all of the messages.

To leave the chat room, click Leave.

Logging Off

When you finish your instant messaging session, perform these steps to log off:

  1. In the PHPIM window, click Log off.
